Rebecca Inspiring Story

Rebecca Wambui: My Story of Perseverance and Hope Introduction My name is Rebecca Wambui. I am 22 years old, and I come from Dandora, Nairobi. I am sharing my story to show the journey I have taken to pursue education and to seek support to continue my studies at university. Early Life I was born in a remote village in Dandora, Nairobi. My parents separated when I was young, and my father moved back to Tanzania for work, taking me with him when I was eight years old. I grew up in a village called Mwakisandu. Life was very challenging. My father had three wives, and I have eighteen siblings in total. As a child, I walked barefoot for two hours to school and two hours back, often without breakfast. At home, I helped care for the goats and did many household chores. Despite these hardships, I loved school and worked hard, reaching Grade 7 and performing well. Unfortunately, I could not continue to high school due to lack of fees. In our community, girls’ education is not always valued. At age 16, girls are often forced into early marriages. When I finished Grade 7, my family wanted me to marry an older man. I refused and knew the only way to continue my education was to leave. But I didn’t know where to go. Turning Point: David’s Story how I met Rebecca In 2016, a mission trip to Tanzania changed my life. A woman from Kenya named Mama Esther invited a team to visit Mwakisandu. We traveled for three days to reach this remote village, where technology and development had barely arrived. The villagers welcomed us warmly, and the women and girls wore traditional shukas, kneeling to greet us. After three days of sharing the gospel, two young girls approached the team—Rebecca and another girl named Rehema. They told us that they we wanted to continue with their education and expressed that we were being forced into early marriage. We went and talked with their parents. At first, their parents refused, but after prayer and persistent conversations, God softened their hearts, and they agreed to let them go. Rebecca continuation of her story, Challenges and Determination in Nairobi By God’s grace, I was allowed to travel to Nairobi to continue my studies. It was a huge relief and a life-changing opportunity. A kind woman took me in, and I began a new chapter of my life, filled with hope and determination. When I arrived in Nairobi, I started Class 6 because of the different education system. I didn’t know English, which made learning very difficult. The first year was extremely challenging, and I had to repeat Class 6 to fully grasp the language. Despite the struggles, I persisted. Finally, I sat for my KCPE and scored 327 marks, surprising everyone and proving that hard work pays off. I joined Gakoe Girls Secondary School in 2021, and from Form 1 to Form 3, I served as a class prefect. I was later promoted to deputy head girl and became the vice-chairlady of the Christian Union, leading worship and preaching the Word of God. I completed my KCSE last year and achieved a B- minus, an accomplishment that astonished both my community and teachers back in my village in Tanzania. Today, many girls in my village see me as a role model. Families who once undervalued girls’ education now encourage their daughters to continue schooling. Dreams and Aspirations My ultimate goal is to return to my community and fight for the rights of girls who are forced into early marriages. I want to inspire more girls to get educated because I truly believe that education is the key to transforming lives and communities. I have been accepted to Maseno University through KUCCPS, which has been my dream for many years. Joining university is an exciting step, but I face a major challenge: I do not have enough funds to pay my tuition and cover my expenses. Appeal for Support I humbly appeal to generous donors, well-wishers, and anyone who can assist me in continuing my education. Your support will not only help me achieve my dream of attending university but will also empower me to give back to my community and inspire other girls to pursue education. Teacher David testimony My name is Teacher David, and I had the privilege of teaching Rebecca Wambui when she joined my school in Nairobi. From the very beginning, it was clear that Rebecca was no ordinary student. When she first arrived, she faced significant challenges. Coming from a remote village in Tanzania, she had never studied in English and struggled to understand lessons. Her performance at first was below average, but what stood out was her discipline, determination, and heart full of purpose. Nothing could stop her from pursuing her dreams. Rebecca always spoke passionately about her desire to continue her education and help girls in her village avoid early marriages. She dreamed of giving back to her community and bringing positive change. Every day, she would study diligently, often spending extra hours mastering English and catching up on subjects she had missed. Her hard work paid off. Despite the obstacles, she excelled academically, surprising everyone by becoming number 3 among the top performers in KCPE. She continued to high school at Gakoe Girls Secondary School, where she quickly became a leader—serving as class prefect, later deputy head girl, and vice-chairlady of the Christian Union. Her devotion to God and leadership skills inspired other students to work hard and serve their community. Rebecca’s story is more than academic success. She is a role model for young girls in her village and beyond. Families who once undervalued girls’ education now encourage their daughters to study, inspired by her achievements. She embodies perseverance, dedication, and the belief that education can transform communities. Now, Rebecca has been accepted to Maseno University—a dream come true. But she faces a challenge: she cannot afford the tuition fees. I am confident that with the support of generous donors, Rebecca will continue to excel and fulfill her vision of empowering girls in her community. Rebecca is proof that determination, hard work, and a heart for change can overcome the greatest obstacles. I believe in her, and I know that investing in her education will yield incredible impact—not just for her, but for her entire community. story. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to hear my story. With your help, I am confident that I can continue my education and work towards a brighter future for myself and those around me. Sincerely, Rebecca Wambui
